Vocational education: an inlet to solving SA’s skills crisis

Vocational education: an inlet to solving SA’s skills crisis

Author:

South Africa has one of the highest youth unemployment rates in the world (at 55.9%). SA’s working population (labour absorption rate) is also unfortunately on the decline. Various factors are at play, but a recent report by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) flags the need to address skills imbalances.
Vocational education consists of a wide variety of qualificationsOne of the report’s key recommendations is to better align the vocational education system with the needs of the workplace. Vocational education consists of a wide variety of qualifications, which are offered by Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) or private colleges. Curro now offers the NCV in a school-based environment as an alternative to completing the National Senior Certificate (NSC) or matric.
The minimum entry requirement for an NCV is an NQF level 1 qualification or Grade 9 pass. Learners can now choose to study the NCV after completing Grade 9, allowing them to specialise in a field of study earlier and learn skills required to ensure that they are employable upon completing NCV level 4.
Stoffel Goosen, Head: Organisational Development at Curro, South Africa’s largest independent school operator, believes that the NCV can play a meaningful role in addressing skills shortages, and thus in targeting youth unemployment. The problem, he says, is that not many people are aware of the NCV as a qualification. “We’ve spoken to many parents who assume NCV is only for those interested in learning trades – to become artisans – or for learners who have failed matric. This is not true.”
“Another misconception about NCV is that it’s easier than the NSC curriculum and has been designed for ‘non-academic’ learners. Again, not true,” Goosen says. “The qualification is of a high standard, the curricula are industry-aligned, and pass requirements are as stringent as the NSC. Learners are required to gain both practical and theoretical knowledge and demonstrate competency rather than simply understand what it requires to become competent.”
Goosen believes that vocational education can help to fill South Africa’s skill gaps, boost productivity and business growth, and increase employment. “The reality is that a university degree is no longer a guarantee that you’ll get a job,” he says. “South Africa needs to solve its skills crisis, and the NCV can be part of teaching learners real-world skills that they can put to work immediately in their chosen field. And, for those who complete their NCV qualification to the highest level, further tertiary education, including university is still an option.”

How to prepare for a learnership interview

How to prepare for a learnership interview

Learnership interview
Preparing for a learnership interview is much like any other working interview you might experience in your lifetime, with the only difference being the difficulty in questions. The more experienced you are, the more complex the questions become. But either way, it’s a process that requires plenty of research.
It’s important to prepare yourself and do the researchIt’s important to prepare yourself and do the research because the opportunity might result in a permanent position. While it’s extremely beneficial for the employer to recruit people for learnerships in Cape Town, candidates can also be rejected if they’re not the right fit for the company. Not to mention, you will probably be up against a variety of other like-minded individuals so you’ll need to show your worth.
Put simply, a learnership is an alternative way to provide people with work experience as well as qualifications. The duration of the learnership is determined by the company, but candidates will be required to complete assignments, projects and practical demonstrations.
The exciting thing about applying for jobs is finding something that resonates with you. You can find learnerships in Cape Town on job listing sites, where there are a variety of different categories to choose from and new learnerships available now. Once you’ve found something you like, start researching. Make sure that you are confident in your application and carry yourself professionally.
Here are a few tips on how to prepare yourself for that career-changing interview.

Dress for success

Many people have lost the idea of dressing appropriately for their interview. Well, newsflash, what you say is not going to make up for your torn jeans. Be it a creative company or a corporate company, go the extra mile with your outfit and dress for the job you want. You’ll never know how casual things can be until you land the job, but before that, rather dress up. If this learnership process is one of the few interviews you’ve been to, make a good impression on how you look and with what you say. You’ll be surprised how far first impressions go, simply from showing up in the correct attire before your designated time.

Do your research

Whether you’re meeting with the recruiter or the employer themselves, make sure you have a clear understanding of what the company does. Particularly the department you’re applying to. Do some research on generic interview questions in case the interviewer asks you. Take the City of Cape Town Municipality learnerships as an example. Some general questions that you can expect to be asked are: “Why do you think you are the best candidate?” or “Why do you want to work for our company?” They also tend to ask questions about yourself, so make sure your responses are professional and have substance. Much like you, there will be others who have the exact same amount of experience, so you’ll need to sell yourself in a way that will differentiate you from the other candidates.

Be honest and open about yourself

If this is your first professional opportunity, you are going to need to speak up about your goals and expectations. After all, you’ve been called in for an interview for a reason, so your application or CV document is clearly a hit. The thing about an interview is that it’s an opportunity to sell yourself. If you haven’t got practical working experience in a particular area, be honest about it. The interview process is the time where you professionally speak about your skills, talents or experience. And depending on your background, those previous posts will either support you or work against you. Either way, landing an interview is a good sign. Now, all you need to do is show the recruiter or employer who you are and why you would be a valuable asset to the company.

Interview your interviewer

On the back of your research, you’ll naturally develop a few questions that you would want to ask. While the interviewer sits there and asks you questions about yourself, it’s also important for you to take the opportunity to ‘interview’ them and see whether or not you feel you might be the best fit for the company. Nowadays, companies put a massive focus on culture, so it’s important for you to also take the time to see if you like the energy the company gives off. The questions you ask should be respectful in every way, as they will also be able to judge you on that. If they appreciate your interest, they will also be able to gauge how insightful and determined you are as an employee. It might even sway their decision.
Interviews are never easy. In fact, they’re stressful, humiliating at times and awful too. Everyone gets nervous during their first few interviews, and if you haven’t been to one in a while, you’ll quickly remember how daunting it can be. However, by doing your research and staying ahead of your game, your confidence levels will increase and you’ll start to get the hang of it. If anything, it’s an opportunity to learn.
Always be polite and friendly in your interview. Make the most of the experience and remember that as much as you need to fit into the company, the company also needs to be the right fit for you.

The 'wild side' of emotional intelligence

The 'wild side' of emotional intelligence

Wilderness Safaris simply gets that Emotional Intelligence is an important focus amongst their workforce. Elmarie Pretorius, from The Mindspa Institute (Soft Skills training company),International speaker, trainer and author presented the EQ course at their premises in Rivonia, Johannesburg during February 16.
The value of relationships is often not realized. The EQ course teaches companies about the value of a well maintained relationship between colleagues, customers, stakeholders and even understanding competitors better.
It is all about being a great partner in every aspect of the company. You learn to develop your leadership, work better together in a team, sharpen up your management skills and understand how important communication is. A company, who is emotionally intelligent, excels in all areas and their staff is productive, efficient and motivated. Everyone is aligned with the business values.
This course makes everyone confident.
The term Emotional Intelligence (aka EQ), with specific reference to the workplace, can be identified as your ability to understand and recognize the impact your own emotions have on your behavior as well as how to comprehend and leverage the emotions of colleagues so as to manage situations. Ms Pretorius from The Mindspa Institute provides these types of training modules regularly to forward thinking companies like Wilderness Safaris.
With over 80 years’ experience, Wilderness Safaris are leaders in the tour operating industry in Africa. They believe in creating journeys, not holidays. During such life—changing journeys their guests are able to visit some of the most remote and pristine areas in Africa. They are driven to help conserve Africa's spectacular biodiversity and share ecotourism‘s benefits with neighboring communities. Even more so, they pride themselves on developing the leadership behaviors within their company.
“EQ is one of the areas highlighted by employees as an area of interest for further training (through performance management conversations) — It is also an opportunity identified through the 2015 skills audit, and so was incorporating in our projected training plan. In the bigger picture — people development is an important focus for Wilderness Safaris. We need to provide growth opportunities in order to develop leadership behaviors aligned with our company values”, Eugenie Luck from Wilderness Safaris emphasizes.
These skills are becoming so important and crucial in identifying leadership qualities. More and more Human Resource managers test this during the interview process especially when recruiting senior management. These set of skills help lead, engage and motivate any team.
Wilderness Safaris will definitely not get left behind. With an emotional intelligent workforce they are bound to build the partnerships in all areas of their industry.
*The Mind Spa Institute, established in 2007, is a soft skills training organization accredited by SETA and aligns with all SAQA’s standards and NQF levels. 10 frequently asked questions on learnerships

10 frequently asked questions on learnerships

Learnership,
You might have heard the phrase “Never stop learning, because life never stops teaching”. Companies can learn from learners and the learner can learn from the company. The opportunities and advantages are so worth it. This article explains Learnership programmes – whether you are a potential learner or a company looking to invest in the future economy and the workforce.
Herewith some frequently asked questions:
1. What is a Learnership?
It basically is a structured learning programme during which the learner spends some time learning theory and some time learning practical skills in the workplace directly related to an occupation or field of work, for example, electrical engineering, office management or project management. A Learnership is a work-based learning programme that leads to an NQF registered qualification, managed by Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs). They were introduced by government to help skill learners and to prepare them for the workplace.
Before the programme is implemented, a contract is drawn up by the employer, the learner and an accredited skills development training provider. Each agrees to specific conditions and the contract protects all parties for the duration of the programme.
2. Why were Learnerships created?
The government was looking for ways to transform skills development in South Africa. The primary aim of Learnerships is to address the gap between the current education and training provided and the needs of the labour market. In fact, Learnerships are seen as central to skills upliftment in South Africa.
3. Why should companies consider a Learnership programme?
They aim to address challenges of:
• Decreasing employment;
• Unequal access to education and training, and employment opportunities;
• The effects of race, gender and geographical location on educational advancement;
• and over and above the skills shortages in South Africa.4. Who are the parties involved in a Learnership?
There are three parties involved in a Learnership: The learner, the employer (offering the practical training component in their business) and the education and training provider (offering the theoretical component of the Learnership).
5. Who is eligible for a Learnership?
• Learnerships are available for young people between the ages of 16-35, who have completed school, college or learning at other training institutions.
• Unemployed South Africans can only participate in a Learnership if there is an employer prepared to provide the required work experience. The learner is dependent on a contract that legally binds all the parties and requires the learner to be employed by the employer only for the duration of the Learnership where after the employer can decide on whether to continue employment.
6. What are the benefits for learners?
• Better employment opportunities afterwards
• Fixed-term employment contract for the duration of the Learnership;
• Learnerships improve on the job performance so they are able to do things relevant to the job

• A nationally-recognised qualification that is relevant to the sector;
• Earning a learner allowance for the duration of the Learnership.
7. Will the learner be paid?
There is a specified minimum learner allowance that must be paid to unemployed learners in a Learnership. This is not a salary but covers expenses like travel and meals.
8. What does a learner receive on completion?
During the Learnership, learners will be required to complete assignments, tasks and practical tests and projects. They will be formally assessed in the classroom and workplace.
If all these assignments are completed successfully, they will be awarded an NQF-registered qualification, which is recognized nationally. They will receive a certificate stating the qualification and the area of skill development.
9. What is required to enter into a Learnership?
If a learner is accepted he/she will need to sign two legal documents:
• 1. Learnership Agreement: this is an agreement signed by the learner, the organisation employing the learner, and the education provider offering the theoretical training component of the Learnership. This agreement clearly outlines the rights and responsibilities of all three parties.
• 2. Employment contract: this is a contract they will sign with the employer, which is only valid for the time period of the Learnership.
10. Can a Learnership be terminated?
An employer can terminate the contract of a Learnership if:
• The duration specified in the Learnership agreement has expired;
• The employer and learner have agreed in writing to terminate the Learnership agreement, or if there is no such agreement, the SETA that registered the agreement approves the termination; or
• The learner is fairly dismissed for a reason related to the learner`s conduct or capacity as an employee.
Learnerships are positive programmes that enhance the education and potential of our youth entering the workforce. The Mindspa Institute assist companies in the Learnership Programmes. The aim for this article was to educate companies and learners on what this programme entails. Charlie & Kathy will be able to assist further. Please contact them for more information or an appointment by emailing charlie@themindspa.co.za or kathy@themindspa.co.za .

6 reasons you should care about your employees’ health

6 reasons you should care about your employees’ health

Author:

When you run a business, especially a SME, there are many things you have to worry about. For starters, you have to make sure the company is running smoothly at all times. You have to be certain your clients’ needs are being met. And you have to ensure your staff members are doing their jobs correctly. You have a lot on your plate.
You don’t have time to worry about much else. So, why should you care about something as seemingly trivial as your employees’ health. That doesn’t really have to do with your business, does it?
Well, yes it does have a lot to do with your business and here’s why.
Healthy employees are more productive
It’s simple, when your employees feel good, they operate at their best. They’re energetic and therefore able to get more done. When an employee is ill, they feel horrible and are likely to be slower. If they have a sore back or chest infection, they may be in too much pain to do things properly. They will feel sluggish and be more concerned about their failing health than meeting those urgent deadlines.
Healthy employees don’t take sick leave
Every employee is entitled to certain amount of sick leave during a specific period of time. But that doesn’t mean it should be used. When someone takes a sick day, their work is pushed over to the next day. They become late on deadlines and their tasks build up, meaning they’re more stressed when they return to work. Which can cause them to have to work overtime when they’re still recovering from an illness.
And when someone takes a week or longer to recover, their work becomes someone else’s problem. Their colleagues then have to deal with their own work as well as the tasks of the sick person. This can cause delays in production, mistakes being made and unhappy clients. People taking time off work when they’re ill has a direct negative effect on your business.
Healthy employees don’t spread sickness
As someone who has spent quite some time in the business world, you will know that when one person comes into work sick, it spreads to other employees. One person may believe they’re able to make it through the work day with a bad cough and a sore throat but when others catch the bug, half your office will be taking sick leave. That means you lose half your resources for however many days it takes for them to recover. Once again, it causes delays in production, mistakes being made and unhappy clients. Only this time, it’s to a far greater extent.
Healthy employees aren’t distracted
When people are sick, they become distracted. It’s not because they have a bad work ethic, are not concerned with the job at hand or simply don’t care. It’s because they are in extreme discomfort. This means they can’t fully focus on what they’re doing. When someone is in pain, it’s the only thing they can think about. They’re dreaming about their bed while filling in important forms. Errors are likely to occur and they may not notice because they’re feeling light headed or are trying to cool down from their fever. It’s not their fault but it is a problem.
Healthy employees are less stressed
Health issues aren’t limited to a viral or bacterial infection. They can be chronic pain or larger issues that require constant medical check-ups and medication. These can cause a lot of stress for employees. Not simply because they are uncomfortable but because they can face financial strain due to medical expenses. And the stress they’re facing can impact their job performance. People who are stressed in their personal life often bring that stress to work with them. It can be quite difficult to leave issues of that nature at home.
Healthy employees are more positive
Have you ever encountered someone in ill health who has a generally negative outlook on life? This is because it’s hard not to be a pessimist when you’re in constant pain, are financially stressed due to medical expenses or simply feel awful all the time. It’s not because they fail to see the good in life, it’s because even the most beautiful landscape is ruined when your body is not cooperating.
Healthy employees, on the other hand, feel more positive. They have energy and look forward to waking up in the morning. This means they’ll spread cheer throughout the office instead of negativity.
As an employer, you should care about your employees’ health because it directly influences your business. It can affect productivity and cause absenteeism and stress. Which is why you should consider offering medical aid with day-to-day benefits to your staff. This will ensure they’re always at the top of their game and doing their best for your business.
